Savouring Each Moment

When was the last time you took your time, you savoured it? Savoured what you are doing at that  specific moment in time. That you let it sink in your mind  and soul.

Today’s world is built on consumerism. It’s all about consuming what’s available. Then we need  more and more. Where does it end?

Well, it simple does not.

Why?

Because the current  system in the world is  built on it. There are some efforts on sustainability but all such efforts will be in vain, if we don’t build a system involving less consuming, more producing.  But on a local scale.

During the pandemic months, some sectors flourished  and some almost went bankrupt. Because people could not consume enough. Many counter measures  were taken but still we are at the same predicament. Whether we should save the economy or stop the spreading of the virus.

Another reason is that the current system cannot run even when there is a little decline in the consuming.

What is the solution?

To change the system?

Well, easier said than done, of course. We can start with changing ourselves. As Ghandi once told, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. That’s also not that easy. However, far easier than changing the system and/or the world.

The reason I  started writing this article was not  really to talk/write about it but as I understand, it has everything to do with it. So, let’s go on.

Think about yourself for a moment. When you watch a tv series and you have some time ‘to kill’, do you binge?

Many of us do that. Maybe even the best of us. By doing so, we just watch them but not savour. Not enjoy every moment of the show/movie we are watching. Taking in all the exchange of ideas. Glances, saying millions of words without a sound.

There are really interesting outcomes and messages in those productions. I feel myself  killing my time instead of  savouring it, when I binge. Because the time I spend to watch my favourite shows, movies should be fun, enjoyable, relaxing. In order words, I want to savour the time I spend watching it. And then think about it. If I really like it, I also write about it on my website, here. About books, tv series, movies etc. If I binge, I cannot write about them afterwards. Even if I write, it’ll not keep the standard I want to keep.

I recently watched Luficer. All 5 seasons of it. I took my time, but not enough. In each episode, there is a different case. Different events and a lot more. I just felt like I missed a lot for my first run of watching them. Then I started once more. I know what’s going to happen but that’s not really what matters. What matters is what they talk about. What reactions they have. How they support each other and more importantly the love between Lucifer and the Detective Chloe Decker. Just a glance from the detective, in truth, tells a lot more than the words. Words do not give it enough credit. I feel like I should watch them with my eyes, mind and soul, all working at the same time,  for the same goal: Savouring the moment.

Just like this guy.

Think about sex.  It’s the most exciting and fun activity we all love. But do we savour each moment or are we trying to end with a quick orgasm instead?

When we travel, are we trying to get to the destination as soon as possible? Or we are enjoying the ride instead.

There is a quote: Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.  We usually focus to take as many breaths as possible. Not enjoy each breath or experience the moments that take our breath away.

Life is quite interesting and has a lot to offer. What we can do is totally up to us. Savour it or consume it.

Which one do you prefer?
