Need a Movie Suggestion? Try “The Dictator”

It’s coronavirus time babe. Everybody needs something to kill time with.

Ever wondered how some countries in the Middle East and some African countries are ruled. Watch this movie. It may be not as fun if you’re from a similar country though.

Netflix is one of the victors of the coronatimes. They managed a great leap during this time. For the first 3 months of this year, they gained 16 millions new customers. That means about 10% increase in numbers of subscribers. Everybody is watching Netflix movies, documentaries, TV shows etc. People are asking each other Netflix recommendations. Because other options are usually more pricey. Or not as popular.

So, after this brief introduction, I’d like to recommend you a movie, if you haven’t seen it yet. You should definitely see it. It’s fun. It’s interesting. It’s depicting many world leaders in today’s world. Not just Middle East leaders/dictators.

The movie is about an dictator. They explain the life of a dictator in a fun way, from the perspective of comedy. It may not be as effective method as drama but I always prefer comedy over drama. In life, there is drama at every moment we breath. We don’t need to watch the same on TV as well.

Let’s turn back to the movie. If you go on reading, the following sentences will include some spoilers.

So, stop here and watch the movie. Then go on reading. You’ll not regret it, if you like comedy.

As mentioned, Aladeen is the main character: The Dictator. He is overthrown by his uncle and tries to seize power once more, with the help of a young activist woman. He is called Admiral General Aladeen , the supreme leader of the Republic of Wadiya. And in terms of appearance he reminds me of Libya’s overthrown leader Gaddafi.

Aladeen is the greatest person on Earth. He is winner of every sports event. He is an olympic medalist, but of course the olympics only take place in his country and nobody is stupid enough to oppose or challenge him. The ones he comes across with, are all killed (?) immediately.

I will not give details of the movie, since such an act will ruin the movie spectators. However, what I liked in this movie was that Aladeen was so praised, that he didn’t even think it was just a lie. Poisoned by absolute power. He believes that he is the ultimate human being. He sleeps with Hollywood stars, both men and women, he has everything a dictator would ever want. He even argues with the scientists about the shape of the nuclear rocket, whether it should be pointy or round.

If you know the world and especially countries in the Middle East and some African countries are all like that. Once upon a time, I discussed a similar situation with a friend of mine from Tunisia. She was studying international politics and was claiming that the prime minister/president, when elected, was entitled to do as he saw fit. Because he was elected with the highest number of votes. He would not care about the opposition and that this situation was democracy, according to her.

At the end of the movie, Admiral General Aladeen speaks to the UN delegate in New York. People from many countries are present. He talks about democracy. How 1% of the people own most of the money in the country, how people talk about free media, while so many different names in the media are all owned by one person, one family only.

His last title is even more hilarious than the first. Check it out.

I’ll not say it’s the best comedy available. Not even close. But it’s fun, easy going and points out very good details about life in dictatorships. And that not all dictatorships are called thus. All of that in this 84 minutes long movie. Just watch and let me know your comments afterwards.
